Babesiosis: Symptoms, Risks & Tick Prevention

What Is Babesiosis?

Babesiosis is a tick-borne illness caused by microscopic parasites that infect red blood cells. It is most commonly transmitted through the bite of an infected blacklegged tick (also known as the deer tick).

Babesiosis cases are most frequently reported in the Northeast and Upper Midwest, but tick populations continue expanding into new regions.

How Is Babesiosis Transmitted?

Babesiosis spreads primarily through tick bites. The same ticks that transmit Lyme disease can also carry the Babesia parasite.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), transmission usually occurs after a tick has been attached for several hours.

Symptoms of Babesiosis

Symptoms can range from mild to severe and may include:

  • Fever and chills
  • Fatigue
  • Muscle and joint aches
  • Sweating
  • Headache
  • Anemia (in more serious cases)

Some individuals experience mild symptoms, while others — especially older adults or those with weakened immune systems — may develop more serious complications.

Is Babesiosis Dangerous?

Babesiosis can become severe if left untreated, particularly in people with compromised immune systems or underlying health conditions. Early diagnosis and medical treatment are important.

Reducing tick exposure remains the most effective prevention strategy.

How to Protect Against Tick-Borne Diseases

Ticks thrive in wooded areas, tall grass, brush lines, and shaded yard edges. Managing tick populations around your home lowers exposure risk for families and pets.

Professional tick control services help:

  • Reduce tick populations in yard environments
  • Target perimeter zones and wooded edges
  • Support Lyme disease prevention and protection from ticks
  • Lower overall tick-borne disease risk

Mosquito Sheriff provides professional mosquito tick control programs designed to protect residential outdoor spaces.

The Bottom Line

Babesiosis is a serious tick-borne illness, but prevention begins outdoors. Reducing tick populations where families spend time helps lower exposure risk.

Protect your yard. Protect your family.
