Anaplasmosis

Anaplasmosis: Symptoms, Risks & Tick Prevention

What Is Anaplasmosis?

Anaplasmosis is a tick-borne illness caused by the bacterium Anaplasma phagocytophilum. It is transmitted primarily through the bite of an infected blacklegged tick (also known as the deer tick).

The same ticks that spread Lyme disease and babesiosis can also transmit anaplasmosis, making prevention especially important in areas with high tick activity.

How Is Anaplasmosis Transmitted?

Anaplasmosis spreads when an infected tick attaches and feeds on a person. Ticks are commonly found in wooded areas, tall grass, brush lines, and shaded yard edges.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), symptoms usually begin within 1–2 weeks after a tick bite.

Symptoms of Anaplasmosis

Symptoms can range from mild to severe and may include:

  • Fever and chills
  • Severe headache
  • Muscle aches
  • Fatigue
  • Nausea or abdominal discomfort
  • Occasional rash (less common than with other tick illnesses)

Some individuals may experience mild illness, while others — especially older adults or those with weakened immune systems — may develop more serious complications.

Is Anaplasmosis Serious?

Yes. If untreated, anaplasmosis can lead to severe health complications. Early medical diagnosis and antibiotic treatment are typically effective.

Because tick bites are often painless and may go unnoticed, reducing exposure risk is critical.
