EhrlichiosisEhrlichiosis: Symptoms, Risks & Tick Prevention

What Is Ehrlichiosis?

Ehrlichiosis is a bacterial illness transmitted primarily through the bite of infected ticks. It is most commonly spread by the lone star tick, which is found throughout many parts of the United States.

Cases of ehrlichiosis have increased in recent years as tick populations expand into new areas.

How Is Ehrlichiosis Transmitted?

Ehrlichiosis spreads when an infected tick attaches and feeds on a person. Ticks typically live in wooded areas, tall grass, brush lines, and shaded yard edges.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), early detection and treatment are important to prevent complications.

Symptoms of Ehrlichiosis

Symptoms usually appear within 1 to 2 weeks after a tick bite and may include:

  • Fever and chills
  • Headache
  • Muscle aches
  • Fatigue
  • Nausea
  • Confusion (in severe cases)

Some individuals may also develop a rash. If symptoms occur after tick exposure, seek medical attention promptly.

Is Ehrlichiosis Serious?

Yes. If untreated, ehrlichiosis can become severe, especially in older adults or individuals with weakened immune systems. Early antibiotic treatment is typically effective.

Reducing tick exposure is the most effective way to lower risk.
