Mosquitoes in Standing Water
Mosquitoes in Standing water -Treating standing water is all part of the service Mosquito Sheriff does for you monthly.
1. Eliminate Standing Water
- Empty and Clean Containers: Regularly empty and clean containers like buckets, flower pots, and bird baths. Even small amounts of standing water can be breeding grounds for mosquitoes.
- Store Items Properly: Store items that can collect water, such as tires, toys, and gardening tools, in covered areas or upside down.
- Cover Water Storage: Ensure that water storage containers like barrels and tanks are tightly covered with lids or fine mesh screens to prevent mosquitoes from entering and laying eggs.
2. Maintain Proper Drainage
- Unclog Drains and Gutters: Keep roof gutters and drainage ditches clean and free of debris to ensure proper water flow and prevent water accumulation.
- Level the Ground: Fill in low-lying areas in your yard where water can pool. Ensure that your lawn and garden areas have proper drainage.
3. Treat Water
- Use Larvicides: Apply larvicides to standing water that cannot be eliminated. These chemicals kill mosquito larvae and are safe for use in water that won’t be used for drinking. Follow manufacturer instructions for safe use.
- Introduce Natural Predators: Add fish that eat mosquito larvae, such as Gambusia (mosquito fish), to ponds and water gardens.
4. Use Mosquito Dunks
- Biological Control: Mosquito dunks contain Bacillus thuringiensis israelensis (Bti), a bacteria that specifically targets mosquito larvae. Place these dunks in standing water to kill larvae without harming other wildlife. Learn more about mosquito dunks.
5. Change Water Regularly
- Refresh Water Sources: Change the water in pet dishes, bird baths, and wading pools at least once a week. This interrupts the mosquito breeding cycle.
6. Maintain Pools and Fountains
- Clean Pools: Keep swimming pools clean and chlorinated, even when not in use. Ensure that pool covers do not collect water.
- Operate Fountains: Keep ornamental fountains running to prevent water from becoming stagnant.
7. Seal Septic Systems
- Cover Vent Pipes: Ensure septic tanks are properly sealed and vent pipes are covered with fine mesh to prevent mosquitoes from accessing them.
